Around the world, metropolitan area networks are being installed. These offer connection speeds up to 1Mbps and beyond.

Importantly, some metropolitan area networks do not charge for sending data to other nodes on the same network. TransACT is one such network. TransACT is a fibre-optic network being laid in the Australian Capital Territory. On-network traffic is free, allowing ordinary households to become local content publishers cheaply.

But even with incoming data rates of 1Mbps, individuals with ordinary household connections will not be able to stream audio and video across TransACT to more than a handful of other nodes. A poor-quality video stream is around 40kbps. And outgoing data rates will be around one eighth of incoming data rates. This adds up to an audience reach close to zilch.

TREVBUS aims to solve this problem.
